Golden Eagles clip Blackhawks’ wings in hard-fought game

The REPORTER

The Guerin Catholic girls basketball team got a career night from Ava Bills on Tuesday, and that helped the Golden Eagles to a big win at Sheridan.

Guerin Catholic won a close game 40-37 over the Blackhawks at Larry Hobbs Hall. Sheridan led 13-11 after one quarter, with Kenzie Garner scoring seven points.

“We were double-teaming her, trying to do everything we could and she could still score the ball,” said GC coach Danielle Cardinal. “And they just play super hard.”

Bills also had a solid opening period, with nine points.

“They gave us a run for our money, and thankfully Ava just shot lights out and played really, really well for us tonight,” said Cardinal.

The ‘Hawks led 22-18 at halftime and held a 31-28 lead after three quarters. But the Golden Eagles took over in the fourth period, outscoring Sheridan 12-6. Meanwhile, Bills had a tremendous second half, scoring six points in both the third and fourth quarters, including two 3s in the third.

Bills finished the game with 26 points, making four triples.

“I was pretty motivated,” said Bills. “I think we went into the game expecting a win and the first half went a little slow for us. I wanted to take control and look to score more.”

Bills

Reagan Haines scored six points. Gianna Morelli returned to action after missing some games with an injury.

“It’s a new dynamic,” said Cardinal. “We had to learn how to play without her. Now we have to figure out how to get everything rolling with her. But it’s awesome to see her out there and we look forward to continuing her conditioning and getting more and more minutes.”

Garner finished with 19 points, while Nova Cross scored seven.

“We did a lot of standing instead of being more active in the second half and that really hurt us,” said Sheridan coach Jaidlin Bradshaw. “We’re hoping to be more active going forward and not get stagnant when we are in those tough, close-game situations.”

The Golden Eagles are 9-11 and play Friday at Brebeuf Jesuit in a Circle City Conference doubleheader. Sheridan is 14-4 and hosts Delphi on Friday for a Hoosier Heartland Conference doubleheader.
