Donald Ray Portwood, 85, Cicero, passed away on January 5, 2024, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville, with his family by his side.
He was born May 16, 1938, in Indianapolis to Clarence and Naomi Maxine (Downin) Portwood. He attended schools in Indianapolis and graduated from George Washington High School with the Class of 1956. He then honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps.
Don, as he was fondly known, then served his community working in law enforcement. He first worked with the Cicero Police Department and then worked later years until retirement with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department.
He was a member of the Hamilton County Fraternal Order of Police, Cicero Volunteer Fire Department, and the Cicero American Legion. Above all these accomplishments, Don was a man of faith and did all things unto the glory of God.
He married Karen Kay (Ferguson) Portwood on June 1, 1963, and they recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. They were blessed with two children, Donna Lynn (Jim) Hunter of Cicero and Daniel Ray Portwood (Michelle) of Arcadia.
Additional survivors include his sister, Norma Jean Boyle of Cicero; grandchildren, Tanner (Katie) Hartley, Drew (Alyssa) Hunter, Logan Portwood, and Cole Portwood, plus great-grandchildren: Kathryn, Adelyn, and Axel.
His parents and a brother, Jack Portwood preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at Hartley Funeral Home Cicero Chapel, 209 W. Jackson St., Cicero, with burial to follow at Cicero Cemetery.
