University falls to Bishop Chatard

The REPORTER

The University girls battled foul trouble and a size disadvantage throughout the game and came up short against Bishop Chatard, dropping a 52-45 road contest.

Anyah Turley had 12 points and five assists to lead the Trailblazers and Charlotte Conyers came off the bench to score ten points and add team-high six rebounds and six steals.

The teams traded baskets early in the game with Turley giving University their first lead at 4-2 after an offensive rebound from Leah Norvell. After Alyx Kendall tied it for Chatard, Norvell made a three pointer from the left corner to give the Blazers a 7-4 lead. Kendall tied it for the Trojans and Chatard took the lead for good on an Anna Caskey basket.

The Trojans led 20-15 after the first quarter with Turley scoring six points and Norvell adding five for University. The contest slowed in the second quarter with Chatard taking a 26-22 halftime lead.

Chatard pushed the lead to 34-27 midway through the third quarter but University answered with back-to-back baskets by Keria Bright cutting the lead to three. Chatard led 41-34 after three quarters.

University faced their biggest deficit of the night early in the fourth quarter at 43-34 before Conyers made a three pointer and scored on a baseline drive to cut the lead to 43-39 with 6:10 left.  The Chatard lead was at 47-40 midway through the final period when Meg Roloff scored for the Blazers.

After Bright fouled out with 2:55 left, University made one last run when Turley converted a three point play after Conyers made a steal. The Blazers were down just 47-45 with 1:36 left. University post Mack Feeney fouled out six seconds later and Chatard added five free throws down the stretch for the 52-45 final.

University falls to 5-4 on the season while Chatard improves to 6-3.

The Trailblazers are off until Friday, Dec. 22 when they travel to Carroll to play the host Cougars in the first round of the Carroll Tournament. The Blazers will play twice on Dec. 23, with their first game Saturday against either Lewis Cass or Western Boone. Tippecanoe Valley, Western, Riverton Parke and Covenant Christian round out the field.
