“Winter is officially over!” declared mayor Andy Cook as he kicked off the Valentine’s-themed 5K, 10K and half marathon at Westfield’s Grand Park sports complex.

The event offers opportunities to explore Westfield’s sprawling trails during cold weather, he explained, and encourages residents to continue enjoying local attractions year round.

There are more than 90 miles of completed trails in Washington Township and more than 80 miles within the corporate limits of the city of Westfield, including the Grassy Branch Trail, Cool Creek Trail, Midland Trace Trail, Monon Trail and Natalie Wheeler Trail.

Melt The Trail also featured indoor activities ahead of the race including face painting, costume contests and a card-making station. Contestants in lip-print leggings, pink tutus and heart antennae headbands posed for photos while dozens lined up to send handmade Valentines to residents at the nearby Wellbrooke assisted living facility.

“This embodies the spirit of Westfield,” said Cook, scanning the crowd at the Grand Park complex. “We’re proud of the events we can do here.”
