Golden Eagle Max Fuller aiming for chance at state championship

Guerin Catholic senior Max Fuller will get a chance to play for a tennis state championship this weekend.

Fuller is one of seven tennis players competing in the IHSAA individual state tournament, which begins on Friday at Park Tudor. Fuller (20-3) will play a fellow senior, Bloomington North’s Connor O’Guinn (19-6) in quarterfinal match at 2 p.m. The winner plays Columbus North junior Hank Lin, unbeaten for the season at 21-0, in the semifinals, which take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Park Tudor.

Two other quarterfinals take place on Friday. Unbeaten North Central senior Alex Antonopolous (29-0) takes on Columbia City senior Alex Rongos (24-1), while Culver Academies’ Tyler Li, another unbeaten senior (28-0) plays Adam Koon (24-3) of Mount Vernon. The winners of those matches will play each other in the Saturday morning semifinals.

The semifinal winners play for the state championship at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Regional results

Fuller advanced to the state tournament by winning the La Porte regional last Saturday. The regional was moved to Niles, Mich. because of the weather. Fuller beat West Lafayette junior Jasper Xiang 6-2, 6-2 to claim the championship.

Westfield senior Alex Sagarra played in the Kokomo regional last Saturday. Sagarra beat East Noble sophomore Ettore Bona 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals, but fell to Rongos in the championship 6-3, 5-7, 6-0. Sagarra finished his season with a 19-7 record.
