As the Carmel election season warms up, here’s a set of facts voters can ask candidates showing up at the front door:

In the last 10 years, Carmel’s population increased 22 percent while municipal expenditures increased 128 percent – a factor of six.

Census Bureau estimates put Carmel’s population at 83,619 in 2012 and 101,964 in 2022.

Carmel reports to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance put total expenditures at $262 million in 2012 and $597.2 million in 2022.

Even a fifth grader can see that spending that is six times the growth factor is a formula for disaster.
