Samantha Brown ‘rocks’ Girls Indiana Junior PGA Championship

Westfield’s Samantha Brown has had a nice start to the Indiana junior golf summer season.

The Shamrocks incoming senior dominated the field at the Girls Indiana Junior PGA Championship, which took place June 7 and 8 at Purdue University’s Ackerman-Allen Course. Brown has committed to play golf at Purdue.

And Brown gave Purdue fans in attendance a great preview of what she will be bringing to the Boilermakers team in 2024. Brown won the two-day, 36-hole tournament by nine strokes. She totaled a 69-69=138, going three under par in both of her rounds for a six-under par finish.

Brown made three birdies in her first round, then drained an eagle on the 16th hole. She followed that up with four birdies in the second round.

Another Hamilton County golfer finished in the top 10. Claire Swathwood, an incoming Carmel senior who just committed to the University of Memphis, tied for sixth place with a 76-74=150. Swathwood made three birdies in both of her rounds.

Just a couple days before the Indiana Junior PGA Championship, Brown, Swathwood and Carmel senior-to-be Michaela Headlee were three of the 36 girls to compete in the Dye Junior tournament, which took place June 5 and 6 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel. Brown finished tied for third place with a three-day score of 224.

The first two rounds of the tournament were played on Monday, June 5, and Brown had a good overall day, carding a 73 in both rounds. During her first round, Brown made an eagle on the 15th hole in addition to four birdies. She made four more birdies in her second round. Brown scored a 78 in the Tuesday, June 6 third round, with one birdie.

Swathwood also competed at the Dye Junior and finished tied for 20th place with a 77-77-81=235. Swathwood made one birdie in her first round, then four in her second round, including three in a row on holes 15, 16 and 17. She then made two more birdies in the third round.

Another Carmel senior-to-be, Michaela Headlee, placed 34th with a 79-84-83=246. Headlee, who will join Brown at Purdue in 2024, totaled four birdies in the first round and drained one in the second round.
