The Sheridan wrestling team won its Senior Night dual meet Thursday, beating Hoosier Heartland Conference opponent Delphi 42-27 at Larry Hobbs Hall.
The Blackhawks won seven matches, including three by fall: Austin Bond got a pin in the 126-pound bout, Noah Ehrie picked up a first-period fall at 145 and Jacob Jones also pinned his opponent in the first round of the 182-pound match. Tresdon Hamilton, Peyton Cross, Preston Weir and Zach Bales all won matches by forfeit.
“A win is a win,” said Sheridan coach Steve Leonard. “We filled in a lot of weight classes tonight with kids that aren’t normally there just so we could get some experience. We’ve got several kids out on quarantine and several that have just come back that need practices in. Hopefully the next time we see them, we’ll be full force.”
The Blackhawks are 12-2, which Leonard said is “pretty good for a small school.” The coach pointed to a close dual with Kokomo, where the score finished in a tie. The Wildkats won the dual on criteria.
“Bigger schools are starting to respect us,” said Leonard.
Next up for Sheridan is the Eastern Holiday Classic, which takes place Dec. 28 and 29.

Westfield won an all-county dual meet with Noblesville Thursday night at the Shamrocks’ CSI Gymnasium.
The meet score was 49-18, but it was a hard-fought dual between Westfield and the Millers. Noblesville led 18-12 after six matches, but the ‘Rocks blasted through the second half of the meet, winning the last eight bouts.
“I thought we wrestled very well,” said Westfield coach Phil Smith. “Noblesville’s pretty tough in the upper weights.”
Smith said some of his wrestlers were competing “out of weights” at the meet. “We wrestle again this weekend, so we don’t want have those guys have to make weight twice in a row,” he said. “So we had a little bit different lineup in today and I was pretty pleased with how are our guys wrestled today.”
The meet began with the 152-pound match, and the Millers won that one; Carter Richardson was victorious in an 11-6 decision. The Shamrocks then got back-to-back pins, first from Jason Rooney at 160, then Jackson Anderson won at 170, coming back from a big deficit to get a third-period fall.
The Millers then picked up three straight wins: Seth Stone received a forfeit at 182, Austin Hastings made a first-period pin at 195 and Jacob Long won at 220 by decision. Those victories put Noblesville ahead 18-12.
But Westfield took over from there. Mike Platonov, ranked No. 2 in the state at 285 pounds, won a 5-2 decision at that weight class. That brought up the lighter weights, and the Shamrocks won the next four matches with first-period falls. In order, it was Chase Camire at 106, Porter Temples at 113, Jake Saez at 120 and Braxton Vest at 126.
“They’re the strength of our lineup, for sure,” said Smith. “We’ve got some younger guys in the upper weights, and they’re doing a great job, kind of learning and we’re excited about the end of the season for those guys.”
Jonathan Maynard won a tough match at 132 by a 2-0 decision, then Thadeus O’Neill took the 138 bout with a major decision. The closest match was the last one of the evening, with Ike O’Neill edging out Gage Gulley at 145 in an overtime decision.
“We wrestled tough,” said Noblesville coach Michael Weimer. The Millers were coming off a tough Tuesday dual against Hamilton Southeastern, and Weimer thought his team responded after that match.
“Saw a lot of good improvements from Tuesday to Thursday and a lot of belief and understanding,” said Weimer.
“I always tell the guys ‘We haven’t arrived.’ We have not arrived, but we’re not flying under the radar,” said Weimer. The coach said that everyone is going to give his wrestlers their best, “so you got to believe that we’re going to give our best too, and our kids are starting to believe that a little bit.”
