Two Hamilton County players advanced to the match play round of the Women’s Western Junior Championships, which is taking place this week at Woodland Country Club in Carmel.
Jocelyn Bruch, an incoming senior at Westfield, finished tied for fifth in the stroke play round with a two-day score of 145, one-over par. Bruch had two birdies in each of the two rounds, which took place Monday and Tuesday.
“I played pretty solid,” said Bruch. “I just tried to play one shot at a time and just play as best as I could. I wasn’t really making as many putts as I would’ve liked, but I just had to grind on because I knew it was pretty close.”
Westfield’s Gabriella Gilrowski tied for 10th in the stroke play with a two-over 146. Gilrowski made four birdies in her Monday first round, and five more on Tuesday.
“I think I played good,” said Gilrowski. “I had a really good start, actually.” Gilrowski made four birdies in her first five holes.
“Solid start out of the gate,” said Gilrowski. “I had a couple rough holes out there, but didn’t let that hold me back. The weather was tough, it was playing really wet.” Gilrowski said her goal was to get on to the greens, “make a couple putts and have fun out there, most importantly.”
The match play portion begins at 7 a.m. this morning with the Round of 16. Gilrowski will play Alexis McMurray of Oakville, Ontario, with a 7:24 a.m. start, while Bruch plays Caroline Jordaan of Denver with a 7:40 a.m. start. Winners play in the quarter-finals later today.
