With several talented and experienced players returning to the lineup, the Sheridan girls basketball team is hoping to have an improved season this year.
The Blackhawks have five seniors on their roster, including their top scorer from last season. In addition, a solid junior class includes Sheridan’s leading rebounder from last year.
“We have five seniors as well as three juniors with significant varsity playing time returning,” said Jaidlin Delph, who is back for her third year as the Blackhawks’ head coach. “We lost one senior last year with good leadership but we are hoping to have our seniors step up and lead our team and have a much more successful season than we did last year.”
One of those seniors is Allie Delph, who led the ‘Hawks in scoring with 8.5 points per game last year. The 5-foot-7 Delphi was also one of the top rebounders, collecting 4.6 per contest.
Sheridan’s rebounding leader last season was junior Taylor Bates, who also stands 5-7. Bates pulled 7.1 boards per game and could score as well, contributing 6.6 points per game.
Two more seniors will help out with scoring. Emma Went, at 5-7, averaged 4.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per contest. Lillie Dickerson, a 5-8 senior, helped out with 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.
The senior class is rounded out by 5-3 Katy Crail and 5-5 Sierra Duke, both of whom saw varsity time last year as well. Two juniors who gained varsity experience last year are 5-9 Riley Reed and 5-7 Berkley Williams. Sophomores Jacquellynne Bates (5-3) and Chaney Smith (5-7) also got varsity playing time last season as freshmen.
After a delay, the Blackhawks will open their season next Tuesday, Nov. 17 by hosting Brebeuf Jesuit.
