About Woodruff Place
Woodruff Place is often called a treasure by those who live here. Residents welcome you to enjoy their beloved gems during your visit. Among those treasures are park-like beauty, including multiple fountains, urns abundant with flowers, regal statues, historic lighting and antique fences. Beyond the visual beauty is an even more valuable prize – human capital. Neighbors give magnanimously of their time, talent and treasure to make this one of the most community-minded neighborhoods in the city of Indianapolis.
Through the years, many traditions have evolved to unite neighbors: July 4th Parade, Lawn Chair Brigade, Umbrella Chicks, spring and fall neighborhood clean-ups, Halloween party, Easter Egg Hunt, Casino Woodruff, Home and Garden Tour, annual Flea Market, the biennial progressive dinner and others.
In the late 1870s, James O. Woodruff laid out his grand plan for Woodruff Place. He was attracted to a quiet wooded location just east of the city and purchased 77 acres.
His plan included a Victorian version of formal Italian Renaissance gardens which were to include three boulevard drives bisected by grassy esplanades, spacious lots, picturesque homes, clusters of graceful cast iron statues and multi-tiered fountains. Fences and gates at the end of each drive were also part of Woodruff’s original plan.
As you take part in this year’s tour, you will see a variety of architectural styles. Plan to take a long walk to see other home styles, fountains and statuary. You are invited to explore the past and present through photographs on display at the Town Hall during the tour. Celebrate the treasure of Woodruff Place at the 2019 Home and Garden Tour.
