The WFIU-WTIU News team won seven regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including for excellence in their innovation, social media, writing, investigative reporting, newscast, sports reporting and website. Murrow winners represent work of the highest quality produced by radio, television and online news organizations around the world. Regional winners automatically advance to the national Edward R. Murrow Awards competition. The national winners will be announced in June.
The WFIU-WTIU News team also received 18 awards, including Outstanding News Operation for WFIU, in the Indiana Associated Press Broadcasters Association (IAPBA) 2017 contest. The WFIU-WTIU News documentaries Cannabidiol, Kids & Politics and Justice For All? took first and second place respectively in the Best Public Affairs Program (Radio) category. Justice For All? also received first place in the Best Investigative Report (TV) category.
The news documentaries were honored once again Saturday at the Indiana Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Best in Indiana Contest. Cannabidiol, Kids & Politics and Justice For All? earned respective first and second place awards. WFIU and WTIU took home a total of 25 awards in this competition – 24 for the WFIU-WTIU News team and one for WTIU’s documentary James Whitcomb Riley: Hoosier Poet.
“Our listeners and viewers can be justifiably proud of the reporting that they support through their membership contributions. Our reporters have made a concerted effort to add context and understanding to many of the issues important to the communities we serve,” says WFIU-WTIU General Manager Perry Metz.
In addition to the 50 awards the stations have received, WTIU is also nominated for six Lower Great Lakes Chapter Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Honorees include local documentaries James Whitcomb Riley: Hoosier Poet; Assembly Hall: Pride of Indiana; Just Like Me: The Vietnam War –Stories from all Sides; Cannabidiol, Kids, & Politics; and WTIU’s local children’s series The Friday Zone. The winners will be announced June 23 at the 2018 Emmy Gala in Indianapolis.
