Westfield welcomes Avon for final meet of regular season, girls win

WESTFIELD – The IHSAA swimming sectionals are now less than two weeks away, and the preparation for those post-season meets has begun.

Westfield hosted Avon for its final meet of the year at the Westfield Aquatic Center. The Shamrocks split with the Orioles: Westfield’s girls team won 119-67, while Avon edged out the ‘Rocks boys 90-86.

Shamrocks coach Darrick Thomas said the team’s “mission for the night was just accumulate some times where we need to see some times, so we can make good decision on our lineups for sectionals for the girls and the guys.”

The girls sectionals begin on Feb. 6, with the boys sectionals starting on Feb. 20. Before the sectionals start, Westfield will compete in the Hamilton Southeastern Reserve Championship meet, which takes place on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Westfield’s girls won eight of the 12 events. Kiarra Thomas got a double victory in the butterfly and backstroke events. Evie Wheat won the individual medley, Addison Goodwin took the diving event, Laney McCulloch was first in the 500 freestyle and the ‘Rocks swept all three relays.

In the boys meet, Westfield won five events, including a pair of double winners. Garreth Thomas was first in the IM and butterfly, while Zach Welch paced the 500 free and the breaststroke. The Shamrocks also won the medley relay.

“We had a really good meet,” said Darrick Thomas. “We’ve had a long stretch of meets. We had our Senior Night last Thursday night and then we had a club meet Friday, Saturday, Sunday. So, lots of racing the last 14 days. Kids really are livening up and ready for tapers, so we’re getting excited for the championship season.”
