Projects help keep pace with growing community

Westfield Washington Schools (WWS) celebrated the groundbreaking for two new elementary schools on Tuesday, Oct. 29, marking an important step in expanding district facilities to meet the rapid growth in Westfield.

The project includes the construction of a new building for Shamrock Springs Elementary and the addition of a completely new school, Midland Crossing Elementary. The ceremony, held at Shamrock Springs, brought together district leadership, students, community members, and representatives from Schmidt Associates and Garmong Construction, who are leading the design and construction efforts.

WWS Superintendent Dr. Paul Kaiser shared his enthusiasm about the new Midland Crossing Elementary and the district’s strategic growth to serve the Westfield community.

“The Westfield community is growing at an incredible pace,” Kaiser said, “and Midland Crossing Elementary will help foster a supportive, innovative, and inclusive environment as we strive to create learning spaces that not only meet today’s needs but also anticipate those of the future.”

The new Shamrock Springs Elementary building will be located on the current site’s baseball fields, with other elementary schools’ fields used to replace the ones that are lost. Both new schools will be identical in design, featuring a state-of-the-art layout that includes modern safety features, collaborative learning spaces, and updated technology to enhance the student experience. Each school will have a capacity for 800 students and will serve students from kindergarten through fifth grade.

Speaking at the event, Shamrock Springs Elementary Principal Robb Hedges expressed his excitement.

“Today is about breaking ground on a new building; it’s about creating a school that builds upon the strong foundation already in place,” Hedges said. “We’re creating a place where collaboration and learning are woven into every aspect of the school day, every single day – that’s the Shamrock way.”

This project represents the district’s vision for the future. With both schools slated for completion during the 2027-28 school year, the district will shift from its current configuration of six elementary schools, one intermediate school, and one middle school to eight elementary schools and two middle schools. This updated structure will support Westfield’s ongoing growth while providing quality education and enhancing resources for all students.

  1. Why would you want to tear down the most unique and creative building in the district- Shamrock Springs!? It won Architecture awards for design. Additions & renovations would preserve its personality and character.

  2. Shamrock Springs is barely 30 years old. The middle and intermediate schools are much older.
