The Class 4A No. 7 Westfield Shamrocks hosted 4A No. 19 Zionsville in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference opener in front of a packed house at CSI Gymnasium on Friday night.
It was raining outside, but there was also a heavy downpour of three-pointers for the Westfield offense. Those seven total from downtown and a huge surge to start the second half helped push the ‘Rocks past Zionsville 59-40.
Westfield honored the life and family of Tucker Swain at the game, and the ‘Rocks played inspired basketball in his honor.
Westfield led 10-7 after one quarter, thanks to a pair of makes from outside-the arc from Trey Buchanan.
Zionsville kept it close in the second and the ‘Rocks led 22-20 at the half. Maguire Mitchell scored 12 of his game-high 22, helping bring it to a one possession deficit.
Adjustments were made in the locker room for the host Shamrocks. Westfield stormed out to a 17-0 run to start the third to lead 39-20 before Zionsville could blink.
Balance in the period gave Westfield all they needed to run away 26-7 in the third with a 48-27 score to go up 21.
Durante Morton had seven, while Nic Book and Will Harvey both added six to pace the dominant third.
The Eagles made a push in the fourth with a 13-11 period, but that wouldn’t be enough, as Westfield took the HCC opener on its home floor, 59-40.
Zionsville (1-1, 0-1 HCC) gets its first loss in two outings and plays at Lawrence Central next Friday.
The Eagles’ lone double-digit scorer was Maguire Mitchell with 22.
Westfield (3-0, 1-0 HCC) also gets a break until they hit the road next Thursday for an all-county matchup with Class 3A No. 2 Guerin Catholic (3-0). Guerin hosts Hamilton Heights (1-2) tonight.
The Shamrocks had five in double figures. Senior transfer Nic Book had a team-high 12 points on six field goals. Will Harvey and Charles Farrell both had 11 with Trey Buchanan and Durante Morton each pitching in with 10.
