Westfield to seek intervention in Duke Energy rate increase case

Submitted by City of Westfield

In response to Duke Energy’s proposed rate increase, the City of Westfield has announced its intent to seek permission to participate in the case from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC).

This decision comes after carefully considering the potential impact on residents and businesses within the community.

On April 10, 2024, Westfield Mayor Scott Willis released a statement urging Duke Energy to explore alternative solutions that prioritize the well-being of Westfield residents and how he will advocate for the best interests of residents.

Duke Energy’s proposal seeks to adjust rates for electricity distribution, citing infrastructure upgrades and operational costs as primary drivers. This would result in approximately a 16 percent average bill increase in two phases: 12 percent in 2025 and 4 percent in 2026. However, Westfield officials expressed concerns regarding the magnitude and timing of the proposed increase, emphasizing the potential financial strain on local consumers, given Duke Energy received a rate increase of $146 million in June 2020.

The City’s participation in the IURC proceeding underscores Westfield’s commitment to advocating for affordable and reliable energy services. The City aims to reach a balanced resolution through a transparent and collaborative process with Duke Energy and regulatory authorities.

City officials will work closely with legal counsel to prepare a comprehensive case for the IURC review. The City has engaged energy attorneys at Bose, McKinney, and Evans, LLC, to represent the City. There are currently 11 intervenors in the rate case including environmental groups, small and large business customers, Citizens Action Coalition, and the OUCC.

Updates will be communicated through official city channels.
