The Westfield softball team didn’t just play a softball game on Monday. The Shamrocks honored a legacy.
Before the first pitch of our Westfield’s varsity game with Hamilton Heights, the ‘Rocks welcomed Scottie and Avery Wagner, alongside their incredible mom, Heather, to the mound. They threw the ceremonial first pitch in honor of Marc Wagner — their father, husband, coach, mentor, and one of the most faithful champions of Westfield softball.
Marc has spent nearly two decades coaching and umpiring in WYSI, always showing up with encouragement, wisdom, and that famous bucket — the one he said left a permanent ring on his khaki shorts from catching for countless pitchers. His love for the game runs deep, but his love for people runs even deeper.
On Oct. 5, 2024, Marc was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor. Over the past six months, he has endured surgeries, chemo, radiation, and long hospital stays — all with strength, grit, and grace. As of April 10, Marc has chosen to pause treatment and soak in time with his family and friends.
On Monday, Westfield honored that strength. The Shamrocks honored the legacy he’s built on the field and in the hearts of so many.
Scottie and Avery — both proud WYSI alum, WHS grads, and lifelong softball players — stood tall tonight in tribute to the man who’s poured so much into this community. Avery, a former varsity standout and current college grad, and Scottie, who now works in neurology, continue to honor their dad’s journey in powerful, personal ways.
The Wagners have given so much to Westfield. On Monday, the ‘Rocks got to give just a little bit back.
