Westfield came out fast in its Hoosier Crossroads Conference opener with Zionsville on Friday, and that led the Class 6A No. 1 Shamrocks to a 28-10 victory at Riverview Health Stadium.

Westfield scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, both on short rushes. Carsen Melvin got the Rocks on the board with a five-yard trip into the end zone, then Mikeah Webster punched the ball in front the one with 17 seconds left in the period.

A Zionsville field goal was the only scoring in the second quarter, so Westfield led 14-3 at halftime. The Eagles cut that lead to 14-10 with a 22-yard passing touchdown early in the third period.

Melvin answered that late in the third, as his 20-yard throw to Preston Pakala resulted in a touchdown. Midway through the fourth period, Melvin connected with Broc Parker on a seven-yard TD pass, and the Rocks stayed comfortably ahead from that point forward. Owen Wright kicked all four extra points.

Melvin was 12-of-17, totaling 143 yards, with Parker Knott and Pakala both making three catches. Deacon King led the rushing with 70 yards. Keegan Krupp had 10 tackles (five solo, five assists), including 2.5 for a loss and one sack. Krupp and Isaac Weingart both forced one fumble and Samuel Poriah had 3.5 tackles for a loss.

Westfield is 3-0 and plays Friday at Noblesville.
