Westfield High School’s Best Buddies Club held its final meeting before winter break. The group of friends discussed upcoming holiday plans, passed out club T-shirts, and there was some football trash talk. Toward the end of the meeting, one student addressed the entire group about how hurtful the “R” word can be.
Best Buddies fosters one-to-one friendships between students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The high school years are a time of heightened social and emotional development and can be difficult even for students without IDD. Best Buddies helps break through social barriers at an important time in a young person’s life.
