Westfield gets big win & Carmel takes walkoff victory

The Westfield softball team won at Southmont Friday 15-8.

The Shamrocks began the game with two runs in the top of the first inning. Makayla Watson scored the first run on Allie Dolenc’s RBI groundout, then Cara Snedeker singled in Grace Feltz.

The Mounties took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but Westfield responded with five runs in the top of the second. Watson tied the game with a right field single to score Annika Lawrence, then got the go-ahead run on another Dolenc RBI groundout. Grace Fanelli smacked a triple to bring in Megan Stormer and Snedeker, then Sofia Easterhaus doubled in Fanelli to give the ‘Rocks a 7-3 lead.

Westfield added three runs in the third inning. Maggie Roh bunted in Lawrence, then Dolenc blasted a two-run home run, also scoring Watson. Lawrence hit a fourth-inning sacrifice fly to bring in Easterhaus, and the Shamrocks led 11-5.

In the sixth inning, Lawrence hit a center field single to score Easterhaus, then later scored after Watson reached on error. Fanelli finished the Westfield scoring with a flourish in the seventh inning, hitting a two-run homer that also brought in Snedeker.

Both Snedeker and Lawrence had three hits, while Roh, Watson, Fanelli and Easterhaus all had two. Both of Easterhaus’ hits were doubles. Snedeker and Avery Banas both hit one double. Kenzie Hiatt pitched five innings, striking out seven.

Westfield is 12-11 and plays this morning at Mooresville.

Carmel got a walkoff victory over Terre Haute North Friday, winning 4-3 at Cherry Tree Softball Complex.

The Patriots hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. The Greyhounds’ Sophie Esposito led off the bottom of the first with a homer, cutting THN’s lead to 2-1.

Terre Haute North scored a run in the fourth inning to go up 3-1. Esposito scored again in the sixth inning on Lily Sullivan’s RBI fielder’s choice, and Carmel was within 3-2.

With two outs in the seventh, Bella Davis, Mia Fleming hit singles to load the bases; Gracyn Erickson walked earlier in the evening. Esposito tied the game with a single to bring in Katherine Warren, who came in to run for Erickson. Alex Longstreth came up next, and her right field hit scored Davis and got Carmel the win.

Esposito had two hits. Lucy Broughton pitched a complete-game win.

The Greyhounds are 4-12, and play today at Crown Point and Munster.

Hamilton Heights fell to Lafayette Central Catholic 6-1 in the Hoosier Conference third-place game on Friday.

Stats were not available at press time. The Huskies are 14-8 and play Wednesday at Frankfort.

Sheridan dropped an 18-1 game to Fountain Central on Thursday.

The Blackhawks scored their run in the third inning when Emma Settles stole home plate. Jacquellynne Bates and Ashlynn Tryon both had two hits.

Sheridan is 2-19 and opens play at the Hoosier Heartland Conference tournament, which begins Monday at Abby & Libby Park in Delphi. The Blackhawks play Taylor in their first game.
