The Class 4A Zionsville volleyball sectional began Thursday with first-round matches, both of which went the distance.
In the first match, Westfield fell in five sets to the host Eagles. The set scores were 25-21, 10-25, 24-26, 25-14, 15-13. Chloe Sutake and Paige Rudolph both hit 12 kills, with Audrey Bassett putting down 11 and Carsyn Comer hitting 10. Stella Neale served four aces, while Lilly Stanton dished out 41 assists.
On defense, Neale collected 15 digs. Comer made three blocks, with Stella Terpening getting two blocks.
The Shamrocks finished their season 14-16 and thanked their seniors for their contribution to the program: Taylor Welch, Sutake, Dani Schade, Stanton, Lilly Tucker and manager Dominic Parisi.
In the second match, Noblesville got past Fishers 25-22, 23-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-8. Stats were unavailable at press time. The Tigers finished their season 15-17.
The semifinals begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, with defending state champion Hamilton Southeastern playing Zionsville. The Millers, now 25-7, will play Carmel in the second semifinal. The winners advance to Saturday night’s championship match, which starts at 6 p.m.

Guerin Catholic won its opening-round match Thursday at the Class 3A Bishop Chatard sectional.
The Golden Eagles swept Shortridge 25-9, 25-10, 25-15. Paige Mascari put down 16 kills to lead the Guerin Catholic offense. Lizzie Caron dished out 20 assists and Hailey Lytle had 15 assists. Natalie Laughon served three aces. Keira Wolf collected 18 digs on defense, followed by Caron with 10 digs.
The Golden Eagles are 12-19 and play Heritage Christian Saturday in the second semifinal match. Hamilton Heights will play in the first semifinal, which starts at 10 a.m., against either Herron or the host Trojans. A score from that match had not been reported at press time.

At the Class 2A Sheridan sectional, Cascade swept Park Tudor 25-15, 25-6, 25-9 in Thursday’s lone first-round match.
The Blackhawks will host the Cadets in the second Saturday semifinal match. The first semifinal features Covenant Christian and University, which begins at 11 a.m. The championship is set for 6 p.m.
