A new winter weather street treatment is starting in Westfield, and the city is expecting to see significant savings as a result.

The city recently purchased two new trucks, both equipped with 1,800 gallons capacity brine application units that will allow public works crews to apply salt brine to pre-treat city streets before snow events. The pre-treatment creates an additional layer that helps melt snow and does not allow snow and ice to adhere to the streets, making it easier to plow.

It’s estimated that the new procedure will save the city approximately $10,000 per snow event.

The treatment can be applied up to two days prior to a winter weather event.
