Next month Washington Township changes its name to Westfield Washington Township. The addition of Westfield to the name is being made to try to avoid public confusion because there are more than 40 Washington Townships in Indiana, including Marion County’s Washington which is only five miles south of Westfield.
The township administration sought the change, and county commissioners approved it this week as required by state law. The change will follow next month’s election since ballots are already printed with the name simply Washington Township, according to Township Trustee Danielle Tolan.
Townships do not often change their names, and not since 1955 has there been any change of names in Hamilton County. And, that change was only for the part of Delaware Township west of White River. It was essentially added to Clay Township to allow Carmel Clay Schools to function all in one township.
