The Westfield volleyball team swept past Southport in a Wednesday match at The Rock, by the score of 25-11, 25-13, 25-18.
The Shamrocks played well from start to finish, and it was a good result for a team that coach Sandra Burks said is young.
“It’s nice to have a night where the things that we’ve been working on in practice, the girls did them very well tonight and played very clean on our side,” said Burks. “That was our main focus tonight, to take care of our side of the court and to make sure that we were executing what we’ve been working in.”
Westfield has a balanced lineup, with three seniors leading the way: Julia Bohn, Logan Mapes and Abby Heck. After that are six juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen, Addie Hooper and Stella Terpening, both of whom are making an impact.
“I think it’s good to have that balance because as we progress from year to year, we’re going to have some kids with some experience and then add a few new ones each year,” said Burks.
Stats from the Wednesday match were not available and will run in a later edition. The win improved the Shamrocks to 2-3. Westfield dropped its first two games before beating Greenfield-Central for its first victory.
“I think we’ve been progressing well,” said Burks. “Our big focus this year is process and buying into the process of what we’re doing in practice, and then each game, step-by-step, just doing a little bit better. Our goal is to be our best in October.”
The Shamrocks will participate in the Yorktown Invitational on Saturday, playing teams such as Crown Point, Bellmont, Concordia Lutheran and Delta.
“We didn’t get to go last year because it was canceled, but the year before that, we went 4-0,” said Burks. “It’s a great tournament with a lot of great teams and we’re really looking forward to it.”
