Volleyball: Royals win county match-up; Millers, Tigers get easy sweeps

The 2017 volleyball season opened up with an all-county match between Hamilton Southeatern and Carmel on Monday.
The Royals won in straight sets, 25-14,2 5-19, 25-20. Grace Kane led the defense wih 23 digs, with Kat Wagner providing some strong play. On offense, Bria King hit nine kills, Meredith Phillips had eight and Lark Jones hit seven.
“I was proud of how our girls handled the atmosphere and played to the home crowd,” said Royals coach Jason Young.
Carmel stats were not available.
The Royals travel to New Castle tonight.

Westfield fell to Yorktown, last season’s Class 3A state champion, 25-16, 25-20, 25-16 in its opening match on Monday.
Grace Weber led the Shamrocks with eight kills, while Kinsey McAfee had three solo blocks and one block assist. Ellary Detamore made 15 digs, with Claire Hindman getting 13. Caroline Sinicki dished out 22 assists.

Fishers swept past Lawrence Central 25-9, 25-5, 25-19 to win its Monday opener.
The Tigers served 17 aces as a team, with Emma Rosenberg, Bryn Roberts and Camryn Haworth all hitting three aces. Audrey Haworth served two aces.
Rose Duffy handed out 31 assists, in addition to making eight digs and serving one ace. Mallory Hernandez put down 17 kills on a 0.577 hitting percentage, and also hit an ace.
Fishers hosts McCutcheon tonight.

Noblesville won its opener Tuesday, defeating North Central 25-17, 25-21, 25-20.
Lexie Almodovar led the way for the Millers with 10 kills, six digs and two aces. Noblesville had a balanced attack on offense, with Emily Kiser putting down seven kills and Alexa Roberts and Lexie Bowler each hitting five. Maddie Hine ran the offense with 32 assists. Brenna Everingham made 14 digs, with Abbey Brown getting 10. Both Everingham and Brown had one ace.
The Millers host Bishop Chatard on Thursday.

In a Tuesday all-county match, Hamilton Heights beat Guerin Catholic 25-13, 26-24, 25-18.
Ana Collar dished out 12 assists, and also had nine kills, 15 digs and two aces. Hannah Crist made 10 digs, along with seven kills, two blocks and two aces. Tori Hayden hit 11 kills and had one block.
Guerin Catholic stats were not available.
