The Hamilton Southeastern volleyball team got one of its biggest regular-season wins in years on Tuesday.
The Royals, co-ranked No. 4 in Class 4A, outlasted 4A No. 2 Yorktown in five sets in front of a happy home crowd. The scores were 23-25, 25-20, 29-27, 24-26, 15-10. Southeastern was down 24-21 in the fourth set before rallying to tie it up at 24-24, but the Tigers scored the last two points to force a fifth set. The Royals were able to take control of the fifth to get the win – their first victory over Yorktown in five years.
“It was a great match,” said Southeastern coach Jason Young. “It was a great match. Both teams played very, very well. No one really deserved to lose. Obviously, we’re grateful to come out with a win.” The coach also said it was “a great opportunity to go five sets, which is something that we need to do every single year to get ready for the post-season.”
The Royals’ offense was strong the whole evening. Avery Hobson led the hitting with 21 kills, while Lovie Wallace hit 15 kills. Lauren Harden had 14 kills and three aces, and Emily Weber hit 11 kills and handed out 32 assists.
Young called the hitting “big-time performance in the front courts. We’re really thrilled with that.”
Wallace and Tiffany Snook each made 3.5 blocks. Macy Hinshaw dished out 22 assists. Meghan Slaninka made 21 digs and Jada Berg collected 16 digs.
Southeastern is 8-2 and hosts Fishers Thursday in the Mudsock match.
Fishers prepared for the Mudsock match by beating Lawrence North in four sets, 25-22, 21-25, 25-12, 25-10, Tuesday at the Tiger Den.
The 4A No. 3 Tigers improved to 10-1 with the win.
Carmel swept past Ben Davis in a Tuesday Metropolitan Conference match at the Eric Clark Activity Center.
The Greyhounds won 25-11, 25-12, 25-6. Macarty McQueen hit eight kills for Carmel, followed by Caroline Yuska with five, Lauren Evans with four, Ella Brooks with three and Emily Waddell with three. Ella Bostic handed out 26 assists.
Brooks led the defense with eight digs, followed by McQueen with five, Valerie Trent with four and Lauren Evans with three. Yuska made three blocks and Waddell had two blocks. Bostic served six aces, Trent had two, and Lauren Evans and Emerson Evans each hit one.
Carmel coach Kristine Deem said Carmel “controlled all aspects of the match with strong serving and hitting efficiency leading to the sweep,” which keeps the Greyhounds perfect in the MIC at 3-0.
Carmel is 9-4 overall and hosts Zionsville tonight.
Guerin Catholic swept past Lebanon Tuesday, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17.
The Golden Eagles are 5-6 and play at 2A No. 5 Western Boone on Thursday.
Hamilton Heights got a four-set victory over Zionsville Tuesday, 13-25, 25-11, 25-19, 25-20.
The Huskies are 9-2 and host Western Thursday in a Hoosier Conference match.
Noblesville dropped a four-set match to 4A co-No. 4 McCutcheon Tuesday at The Mill. The scores were 25-14, 28-26, 18-25, 25-20.
The Millers are 3-4 and host Westfield on Thursday.
