The Carmel volleyball team began its season on Saturday with a convincing win over a county rival.
The Greyhounds swept Fishers 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 at the Tiger Den in the opening match for both teams. Carmel coach Kristine Deem noted her team had been doing well in practice, and the Greyhounds applied it to their first competition of the year.
“My pre-game at the beginning was just go out there and play,” said Deem. “We’ve been competing really, really well in practices, so it shouldn’t be any different here.”
Ella Brooks hit 10 kills and also collected 10 defensive digs for the ‘Hounds. Caroline Yuska and Macarty McQueen each hit eight kills, while Emily Waddell and Lauren Evans both spiked five kills.
Evans served four aces and had 15 digs. Lauren Dossey made 18 digs and Ella Bostic had five, in addition to handing out 38 assists. Waddell had four blocks and Bostic made three blocks.
“We’ve known that we have a lot of talent in the gym and really seeing who’s going to continue to rise to the occasion, really making sure we’ve been staying unified as a team,” said Deem. “We have a decent amount of depth and the ability to do that.”
Fishers stats were unavailable at press time.
The Tigers will host Lawrence Central on Tuesday, while the Greyhounds travel to Hamilton Southeastern on Monday. The Royals also played their season opener Saturday at McCutcheon, falling to the Mavericks in four in four sets, 27-25, 19-25, 25-18, 26-24.
Westfield dropped a five-set match at Lawrence North, 25-17, 18-25, 16-25, 25-14, 15-6. The Shamrocks host Yorktown on Monday.
