Volleyball: Heights, Westfield, Fishers, University sweep their opponents

The Hamilton Heights volleyball team came back to score a four-set win over Lawrence North in a Thursday home game.

The set scores were 22-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-18. The Wildcats had strong blocking in the first set, which caused problems for the Huskies. But after a slow start in the second set, Heights got going and tied the match.

The Huskies battled to a third-set victory, with Sierra Bramel serving a five-point streak to give Heights momentum. In the fourth set, the Huskies improved their offense with multiple kills from the front row. Kennedy Cherry played strong defense, making six digs in the fourth set.

Heights won the junior varsity match 25-15, 25-21. Hazel Lynch played solid defense for the Huskies in the first set.

Heights is 10-2 for the season. The Huskies return to action Tuesday when they host Frankton.

Westfield won an intense five-set Hoosier Crossroads Conference opening match Thursday at Franklin Central.

The Shamrocks edged out a 25-18, 15-25, 25-16, 21-25, 18-16 victory. Paige Rudolph blasted 16 kills, while Carsyn Comer hit 12 kills. Comer also served two aces, as did Emily Blevins, Audrey Bassett and Brooke Neale. Izzy Jackson dished out 29 assists. Kendyl Strack collected 20 digs and Blevins had 12.

Westfield is 5-1 overall and plays Saturday at the Yorktown Invitational.

Fishers scored a four-set win over Zionsville Thursday at the Tiger Den in the Tigers’ HCC opener.

The set scores were 25-16, 25-16, 23-25, 15-12. Elaina Wehrman put down 13 kills, while Ava Gutt smacked 12 kills. Ella Dragoo served four aces. Jules Kellogg had strong defensive game with 23 digs, with Ava Tester and Kennedy Tinch both collecting 10.

Tester and Tinch both dished out 22 assists, while Gutt totaled four blocks.

Fishers is 7-2 overall and plays at the Floyd Central North/South Classic on Saturday. The Tigers take on Floyd Central at 11 a.m. and Providence at 1:30 p.m.

University swept International on Thursday, 25-22, 25-12, 25-9 to being Pioneer Conference play.

The Trailblazers are 2-1 overall and play Wednesday at Muncie Burris in another conference match.

Hamilton Southeastern saw its 71-match win streak come to an end on Thursday, as the Royals fell in their HCC opener at Brownsburg in four sets.

The Bulldogs won 25-22, 13-25, 25-18, 25-22. The last time Southeastern lost a match was on Aug. 13, 2022, when they fell in four sets to McCutcheon. The Royals won their next 34 matches, including the Class 4A state championship, then went undefeated in 2023, triumphing in all 33 matches and defending their 4A state title.

Southeastern is 4-1 for the season; the Royals swept Benton Central in three sets last Saturday. This Saturday, HSE plays at the Floyd Central North/South Classic, taking on Providence at 11 a.m. and Floyd Central at 1:30 p.m.

Noblesville dropped its HCC opener at Avon Thursday in four sets, 18-25, 25-18, 25-13, 27-25.

It was the first defeat of the season for the Millers, who are 4-1. Noblesville is back home at The Mill Wednesday when it plays Lawrence North.
