NOBLESVILLE – The backstroke is not a usual event for Noblesville’s Haddie Vohs, but she put her name on it Thursday evening.

Vohs set a new Millers’ school record in the event during the team’s dual meet with Zionsville at the Noblesville aquatic center. The junior swam the race in 57.51 seconds.

“That was a really good race,” said Vohs. “Not what I was expecting at all. I did not expect that to happen.”

Vohs credited “hard training” and “working hard at practice” for achieving that new record.

“I was really excited about it,” said Vohs. “And just seeing my teammates excited too, it’s just really fun and exhilarating.”

“It’s great,” said first-year Millers coach Jess Preston. The coach pointed out that it is Vohs’ second school record of the year, as she set a new mark in the butterfly race at the beginning of the season.

Preston said that the backstroke is a secondary race for Vohs, “so for her to get a school record in a non-primary event, it’s pretty awesome.”

Vohs had earlier won the 50 freestyle race, making her a double winner for the meet. Eryn McMahon had Noblesville’s third event victory, as she placed first in diving.

The Millers boys team won four events. Joshua Naas was first in the 200 free, Aiden Kless won diving, Brayden Wright paced the butterfly race and Drew Setmeyer led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 500 free.

Zionsville swept both the team standings in the dual meet, winning the girls competition 119-66 and the boys race 104-79.

Noblesville is in the midst of a busy week, having already competed in a dual at North Central on Tuesday. The Millers will head to Brownsburg on Saturday for another dual meet. And the post-season isn’t far away: the girls sectional begins on Feb. 6 with the boys sectional set to start on Feb. 20.

“We’re starting to see the results from all the hard work,” said Preston, who noted that his swimmers are starting to drop time as they get closer to the post-season.

“I think we’re right on track to having a great state tournament, so we’re excited for that,” said Preston.
