Vare secures education endorsements in State Senate race

Submitted by Vare for State Senate

Jocelyn Vare, Democratic candidate for Indiana State Senate District 31, has secured two leading public education endorsements. The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Indiana and Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana’s 44th State Superintendent of Public Schools, officially support Vare. The endorsements recognize Vare’s continued advocacy and call for fair and equal investment in Indiana public education.

“Jocelyn Vare has proven to be a tireless advocate for students, showing her incredible support for public school students, educators, staff and administrators,” Dr. McCormick said. “Her voice in the State Senate is essential and will have a promising impact on Indiana’s future.”

Vare is the daughter of two Indiana public school educators and mother to a current Indiana public high-school teacher. She is also known for her personal and public service to public schools. From showing up consistently at local school board meetings to standing with teachers at the Statehouse, Vare makes the connection between dedicated teachers and community development.

“A community is only as strong as its public schools,” Vare said. “And public schools are only as strong as the community that supports them. I support them.”

During the 2022 legislative session, Vare joined teachers and administrators in opposition to House Bill 1134. According to Vare, the bill threatened educators with legal burdens, ignored student learning loss during the pandemic, and exacerbated Indiana’s teacher shortage.

“I am committed to strengthening our public schools,” Vare said. “The fact that the Supermajority championed such a destructive bill provides insight into how out-of-touch they have become with their own communities.”

After completing more than 3,000 citizen conversations and listening sessions with Indiana State Senate District 31 voters, Vare says she knows people recognize and remember being ignored during the 2022 legislative session.

“My opponent supported House Bill 1134 with a ‘yea’ vote to move it forward through committee, and I am not willing to let that threat to our community continue,” Vare said. “Dr. McCormick and AFT’s endorsements allow me to amplify the voices of parents and students I serve.”

Vare is a business owner who is dedicated to public service. She proves it through her active roles with community non-profits, public education advocacy organizations, and as an at-large member of Fishers City Council. She was the first Democrat elected to municipal office in the City of Fishers and won her election with strong bipartisan support, including an endorsement from the Fiscal Conservatives of Hamilton County.

Vare maintains clear focus on ideals of transparency, balance, and representation. She achieves the ideals by listening to neighbors, residents, and constituents she serves. She embraces her reputation for shining a light on decisions others would prefer to leave behind closed doors. An unapologetic independent thinker, she always returns to and keeps the promises she made to those who elected her.
