University’s win is one for the history books

The University boys basketball team shot their way in to the record book, making 24 3-point baskets in a 108-48 PAAC win over Liberty Christian.
The 24 made 3-pointers is the second most in state history according to the Hickory Husker Book of Indiana High Basketball Records.  Owen Valley made 26 3-pointers in a game against Monrovia during the 1991-92 season.
Eight different Trailblazers made at least one three pointer as University made 24 of 36 long range shots.  “That was the most contagious display of shooting I’ve seen” said University coach Brandon Laffterman.  “We displayed our depth off the bench tonight.”
Junior Max Greenamoyer led the Blazers with 21 points, making 7 of 11 3-pointers.  Senior Quinn Steiner made 6 of 8 3-pointers, finishing with 18 points.  Korey Ash-Simpson (13 points) and Nate Shatkowski (nine points) made three triples each.  Sophomore Matt Jones had a pair and Joe Martin, Sam Mervis and Camden Brown each had one.
University raced to a 15-0 lead in the first four minutes of the contest behind nine points from Greenamoyer.  “We came out with a lot of energy tonight” continued Lafferman.  :We played well on both sides of the ball.  We have talked about converting to points and we accomplished that tonight.”
Greenamoyer had six 3-pointers in the first half, tying the school record set by Eric Wott in 2013 against Fall Creek Academy.
The 108 points scored ties the school record set in 2006-07 against International.
University’s 66.7 percent 3-point shooting is the sixth highest percentage in state history per the Hickory Husker record book.  The 27 combined 3-pointers made by both teams is the third best.
University outrebounded the Lions 30-19.  Brown had eight boards and Jacob Sager seven.
The Trailblazers took great care of the basketball, handing out 27 assists against only eight turnovers.  Mervis had 11 assists and six steals.
The Class 1A sixth ranked Trailblazers improved to 5-1 overall, 2-0 in the PAAC North.  Liberty Christian falls to 2-3 in their first PAAC game of the season.
University has a pair of road games next weekend, at Muncie Burris on Friday night and at Indianapolis Shortridge Saturday night.
