University handily beats Indy Shortridge in season opener

University opened the season Tuesday evening with an easy 72-30 win at Indianapolis Shortridge.

Payton Seay scored 22 of her game-high 25 points in the first half as the Trailblazers raced to a 50-21 halftime lead.  University stretched the lead to 35 early in the third quarter to activate the running clock for the rest of the game.

Kelsey DuBois had 16 points and a team high 10 rebounds for the Blazers and Keira Bright had 11 in her University debut. Jordan Patterson had nine points as the Trailblazers won their season opener for the seventh straight season. Kamryn Washington handed out five assists.

DuBois controlled the opening jump ball, tipping it to Seay who made a lay-in four seconds in to the game. Shortridge’s outstanding freshman Maliyah Williams tied the game at 2-2 before another Seay basket put the Trailblazers ahead to stay with 7:07 left in the opening period.

University led 27-10 after the opening period.  Seay had 15 and DuBois six in the quarter. Jordan Patterson opened the second quarter making a three-point shot.  DuBois split a pair of foul shots before making an old fashioned three-point play for a 34-10 University lead.

Patterson finished with nine points. Charlotte Conyers had four points, Leah Norvell, Hannah Grubbs and Alex Feeney each had two points and Anyah Jordan-Turley had one to round out the University scoring.

Williams had 20 points to lead Shortridge despite sitting out the entire third quarter with four fouls.

University is next in action Saturday in the Kopper Kettle Classic at Morristown High School. The Blazers will play Henryville in the second game of the morning session at 11:45 a.m. before meeting up with either Tri-Central or the hosts in the evening session.
