United Way awards in grants $820K to local organizations

United Way of Central Indiana (UWCI) announced Thursday it has awarded unrestricted grants totaling $1.75 million to human services organizations serving individuals affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Hamilton, Boone, Hancock, Hendricks and Morgan counties.

Locally, grants amounted to $820,000.

These grants were made possible by support to UWCI from Lilly Endowment Inc. The grants build on relief efforts in these areas that were funded by a $3.5 million Lilly Endowment grant announced last year.

With this latest round of unrestricted grants, $5.25 million in total has been distributed to 90 organizations working in these counties of UWCI’s service area.

Workgroups comprising of UWCI community relations staff and county representatives, including staff of the counties’ community foundations, analyzed the needs in each area. Funding recommendations included food, housing, health, and transportation, mental health support for youth, families and seniors, and childcare and child/family safety programs.
