Unified Flag Football: Carmel headed back to state

The Carmel Unified flag football team is heading back to the state finals.

The Greyhounds won the Mooresville regional last Saturday, claiming their second consecutive regional crown. Carmel beat Southport 32-28 in the semifinals, then won another close game in the championship, beating Franklin Central 28-24.

Earlier in the month, the Hounds won their fifth consecutive sectional championship with three victories at Lawrence Central on Oct. 5. Carmel beat Hamilton Heights 40-20 in the quarterfinals, the host Bears 40-28 in the semifinals and edged out Fishers 38-37 in the championship game.

The Tigers advanced to the final with wins over Hamilton Southeastern 44-36 in the quarterfinals and Warren Central 45-37 in the semis. The Warriors won over Noblesville 47-27 in the quarters, while LC won over Westfield 42-20 in another quarterfinal.

Carmel will try to defend its state championship Saturday when it takes on Fort Wayne Carroll at 1 p.m. at Grand Park.
