Two Hamilton Heights wrestlers take state titles

Hamilton Heights’ Kendall Moe is making it a habit of winning a trophy every weekend.

The latest success for Moe came at the Indiana State Wrestling Association Women’s Folkstyle State Finals, which took place this past weekend at Warren Central High School. Moe represented Contenders Wrestling Academy at the meet, and she won two titles, first in the 16U 106-pound weight class, then in the USA Junior 100-pound division.

In the 16U class, Moe won her first two matches with first-period falls to reach the final, then beat Olivia Crull of Northeastern Wrestling Club in a 13-2 major decision for the championship. In the USA Junior division, Moe received a first-round bye, got a 7-0 decision victory in the semi-finals, then beat Madisyn Mikels of Elite Athletic Club with a first-round pin.

Moe was coming off a national title at the which took place the weekend of March 4 and 5 at the Folkstyle Nationals in Tulsa, Okla. Moe won the 94-pound division.

Noblesville also had a wrestler compete in the USA Junior division. Kyra Tomlinson reached the championship match at 132 pounds with a second-period fall in the semi-finals, but was beaten in the championship by Phoebe Dowty of Indian Creek Wrestling Club in a 9-3 decision.

Cain wins at 160

The ISWA men’s Folkstyle State Finals took place at Warren Central last weekend as well, and another Heights wrestler was a winner.

Michael Cain competed in the USA Junior 160-pound class and won six matches to claim the championship. Cain got three pins on his way to the semi-finals, also winning one match by a 12-2 major decision. He edged out Adrian Pellot of the Merrillville Pirates Wrestling Club in the semis by a 9-7 decision, then took care of Jesse Derringer of the Brownsburg Wrestling Club in the championship with a 13-6 decision.

Another Husky wrestler, Carson Fettig, place fourth in the USA Junior 152 division. Fettig was 7-2 at the tournament, winning five of those matches by pin.

As for other county teams:

– Fishers Wrestling Club’s Xavier Smith took third in the 16U 170-pound class, while Chayce Yant finished third in the USA Junior 126-pound division. Five more Fishers wrestlers reached the top eight: Walid Oumammar took seventh at 16U 285 pounds, while Will Hruskoci (16U 106 pounds), Julian Burgett (16U 160 pounds), Crew Farrell (USA Junior 170) and Christopher Quarles (USA Junior 182) all placed eighth.

– Noblesville Wrestling Club had four place winners, with Kyle Howard the runner-up in the 12U 135-pound division. Cale Metzler (14U 187 pounds) and Austin Hastings (USA Junior 220) both took fourth, while Luke Chastain (16 U 138 pounds) was eighth.

– HSE Wrestling Club had four place winners in the meet. Drake Goldsberry (8U 43 pounds), Charles Haider (12U 70 pounds) and Nolan Culp (14U 77 pounds) all placed sixth, while Tyler Jackson (USA Junior 113) finished seventh.

– Westfield Wrestling Club got two wrestlers on the podium. Zeke Temples was fifth in the 10U 140-pound class, while Porter Temples took seventh in the 16U 126-pound division.

Indiana-Illinois duals

Two Huskies wrestlers, and their coach, were part of the Illinois/Indiana Classic Duals, which took place Sunday at Notre Dame High School in Niles, Ill.

Heights coach Gary Myers was the coach of the Indiana girls team, and Zoe Pugh was one of the wrestlers. Pugh was part of Indiana’s 68-21 dual victory, winning her 120-pound match with a third-period pin over Monica Griffin.

Fettig competed for the Indiana boys at 152 pounds. He dropped a close 7-5 decision against Marco Spinazzola, a three-time Illinois state champion.
