Two Hamilton County tennis players, Guerin Catholic’s Ellen Gardner and Westfield’s Julia Gabennesch, participated in the 23rd annual North South Senior All-Star Tennis Cup, hosted by Community Sports & Wellness, which took place Sunday at Pendleton.
Twenty graduating seniors competed in this event that is organized by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association under co-chairs Sharon Rosenburgh and Debby Burton.
The North team captured each of the three rounds of play in securing a 28-19 victory.
Both county players competed on the victorious North squad, coached by Brad Haeck (Plymouth) and Matt DeVault (Alexandria). They joined Erika Becker (Avon), Reiley Hiser and Gracyn Hosier (Alexandria) Hana Anderson (Covenant Christian), Ellen Gardner-Guerin Catholic, Lydia Rugsegger (Mount Vernon, injured), Jordyn Pax (Plainfield), Miranda German (Plymouth) and Hallie Mast (Westview).
Gabbennesch, Gardner and Becker all went undefeated in their three matches the North team to victory. Both played two doubles and one singles match.
In the first round, Gardner won the No. 2 singles match over Center Grove’s Sonya Vyas 6-1, while Gabennesch teamed with German for a No. 3 doubles victory over Sapna Vyas and Sydney Plowman, also of Center Grove, 6-0.
Gardener teamed with Plainfield’s Jordyn Pax in the second round for the No. 1 doubles match, which they won over Center Grove’s Ashlee Fisk and Franklin Community’s Haylie Rayl 6-1. Gabennesch and Becker played the No. 2 doubles match and beat Franklin Central’s Carly Sobieralski and Sonya Vyas 6-2.
In the third round, Gabennesch played No. 1 singles and won a 10-7 super tiebreak over Rayl. Gardner and German teamed up for the No. 2 doubles match, and beat Sonya Vyas and Plowman 10-6.
