University powered its way to a second consecutive regional championship Saturday at Morristown.
The Trailblazers took care of Shakamak 9-0 in the championship game. University scored three runs in the first inning; Dawson Estep led off with a triple and was batted in by Alex Washlock’s left field hit. Ben Westerkamm singled in Washlock, then was later brought home by Nate Shatkowski’s line drive RBI.
The ‘Blazers added six more runs in the sixth inning. Tyler Galyean singled in Washlock, then scored on an error. Westerkamm got home on a wild pitch, Adam Oxley scored on an error, then Matt Moore singled home Shatkowski. Reese Sharp hit a double to bring in Moore.
Washlock was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Galyean was 2-for-3. Sharp pitched six innings for the win, striking out 12.
University advanced to the championship game with a 10-1 win over Indianapolis Lutheran in the first semi-final.
The Trailblazers got on the board with four runs in the third inning: Ben Ewer scored first when Washlock drew a bases-loaded walk, then Dawson Estep was brought in by Galyean’s walk. Ethan Johnson scored on Westerkamm’s sacrifice fly, then Oxley drove in Washlock with a right-field hit.
Washlock singled in Sharp for the first of two University runs in the fourth inning. Westerkamm later batted in Washlock.
The ‘Blazers added four more runs in the sixth inning. Galyean hit a two-RBI single to center field, scoring Estep and Sharp. Washlock scored his third run of the day on an error, then Westerkamm hit his second sacrifice fly of the game, bringing in Johnson again.
Washlock finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate, with Galyean and Oxley both getting two hits. Sharp hit a double, and also tossed six strikeouts in two innings of pitching. Galyean came in for three and two-thirds innings and got the win, also striking out six.
University is 20-10-1 for the season and will play Tecumseh in the Class 1A south semi-state next Saturday. The place will be determined by Tuesday.
