Trailblazers get first season win in overtime

University’s girls overcame a nine-point second quarter deficit to pick up their first win of the season with a 45-39 road overtime win over Brebeuf Jesuit.

The Trailblazers outscored the Braves 10-4 in overtime to pick up their ninth consecutive win over Brebeuf and take a 9-8 series lead over the Braves.

Sydney Culp led University with 14 points on 4 for 6 shooting on three pointers. Taylor Seay had 11.

Trailing 19-10 with 4:33 left in the second quarter, University held Brebeuf scoreless the rest of the half to climb within 19-17 at halftime. Leah Norvell started the rally by scoring in transition with 1:55 left. Seay added a basket with 40 seconds left before Sydney Culp hit a 25-foot three at the halftime buzzer.

Seay knotted the game at 19 early in the third quarter before Gabby Culp scored off a feed from Mack Feeney for a 21-19 Blazers lead. Brebeuf broke a seven-minute scoreless skein to tie the game. The teams traded the lead before Brebeuf took a 31-27 lead on a three pointer on the third-quarter buzzer.

Sydney Culp’s three pointer with 5:35 left in regulation put University up 32-31 but Brebeuf scored the next four points to lead 35-32 with 4:15 left. The Trailblazers scored the game’s only three points during the rest of regulation. Seay split a pair of free throws after gaining possession on a steal before Gabby Culp’s offensive rebound with 2:03 left knotted the score at 35.

Feeney opened the scoring in overtime off a Norvell assist. Brebeuf knotted the score at 37 before Norvell’s three pointer with three minutes remaining put University up for good at 40-37. Seay split a pair of foul shots with 1:07 left for a four-point lead. The Trailblazers put the game away at the charity stripe, with Sydney Culp and Anyah Turley each going 2 for 2 at the line in the last 35 seconds.

After not shooting a free throw in the first half, University went 8 for 10 at the line in the second half and overtime. Brebeuf ended 8 for 17 on foul shots after going 5 for 13 in the first half.

Feeney led University with eight rebounds and six assists.

University is now 1-3 on the season. The Trailblazers will be back in action Tuesday at Sectional 42 host Monrovia. Brebeuf falls to 3-3.
