The high school track and field season begins today in Hamilton County.
Westfield is the first team to participate in a meet, as the Shamrocks travel to Indiana Wesleyan University for a Hoosier State Relays qualifier. The annual meet, known as the unofficial indoor track state meet, is back on this year after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last HSR took place in 2019.
Several teams will be competing in HSR qualifier meets on Saturday, including the Carmel girls, and both Guerin Catholic, Hamilton Heights and Noblesville teams. Westfield is back in action at an HSR qualifier as well. Fishers will travel to Mount Vernon for an outdoor meet.
In fact, some local schools will be headed outside next week. Carmel and Westfield will compete in a dual meet, with the girls at the Shamrocks’ Riverview Health Stadium and the boys at the Greyhounds’ stadium. There will be a few other outdoor meets, but most of the schools will be focused on indoor competition that leads up to the Hoosier State Relays, which take place March 26 at Indiana University.
The outdoor season begins in earnest once April rolls around. All schools will be back in action by the week of April 11. Some significant events on the calendar include the Flashes Showcase at Franklin Central on April 15, Hamilton Heights’ Big Orange Invitational on April 16 and the Carmel 3200 Showcase on April 22.
The Hamilton County meets are scheduled for the second week in May. The girls’ meet is May 10 at Westfield, while the boys’ meet is May 12 at Hamilton Southeastern.
The Royals will also host the girls sectional on May 17, with Carmel hosting the boys sectional on May 19. Regionals take place at Lafayette Jefferson May 24 for the girls and May 26 for the boys. The state finals are back at IU the first weekend in June, with the girls meet on June 3 and the boys meet on June 4.
