Proposal would allow voters to cast ballots at any countywide location

The Hamilton County Election Board is considering a major change to the way residents vote on Election Day: transitioning from precinct-only voting to countywide Vote Centers. Under the proposal, voters could cast their ballot at any of 52 vote centers across the county, rather than being assigned to a single precinct location.

The process will begin with a public meeting of the Hamilton County Election Board at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 13 in the Hamilton County Commissioner’s Courtroom on the first floor of the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center in downtown Noblesville. Once presented, residents will have 30 days to submit written feedback on the proposal. After reviewing all comments, the Election Board will decide whether to adopt the change, make modifications, or maintain the current precinct-only system.

“Hamilton County has always led the way in running secure, efficient elections by doing our research and making good decisions at the right time for the right reasons,” County Clerk Kathy Kreag Williams said. “We look forward to hearing what the community has to say about this proposal.”

Vote Centers are not a new concept. Sixty-seven of Indiana’s 92 counties have already adopted the model.

Williams says the system has the potential to help control election costs.

“With the county’s rapid growth, we are constantly adding new precincts to comply with state law,” she said. “That means more inspectors, clerks, judges, polling places, meals, and voting machines. Vote Centers could give us the access our voters need while also reducing the long-term costs of running elections.”

If approved, the Vote Center model would be implemented beginning with the May 5, 2026 Primary Election.
