Fishers won a tough all-county game with Hamilton Heights 50-45 Wednesday at the Tiger Den.
The Huskies jumped out to a 16-11 lead after the first quarter. Mia Shields threw in three 3-pointers for nine points, while Camryn Runner scored the other seven points. Class 4A No. 7 Fishers came back in the second period, holding Heights to five points while scoring 13 to take a 24-21 halftime lead. Joirdyn Smith and Olivia Smith both had five points during the quarter.
The Tigers led 33-30 after three periods, with Joirdyn Smith draining two 3-pointers. Fishers then held on during the fourth period, with Olivia Smith adding six points.
“The Lady Tigers were led by Joirdyn Smith with 19 points and six rebounds, Olivia Smith with 13 points and six rebounds and Ava Carter with 10 points,” said Fishers coach Lauren Votaw. “Talia Harris led the team with four assists.”
Runner scored 20 points to lead the Huskies, while Shields had 13 points. MyKayla Moran scored 12 points.
“Really proud of our girls tonight,” said Heights coach Keegan Cherry. “Fishers is a really good basketball team. And we had opportunities to win. Margin for error is small. We left some points out there that over the course of the game add up. But overall, our girls showed tremendous fight.”
Cherry credited Shields with making “some 3s early that sparked us” and said Ella Hickok “was great handling the ball.”
“We were able to force Fishers into some defensive rotations that allowed MyKayla to have success inside,” said Cherry. The coach also said Runner “deserves to be in the conversation when people tlak about the best players in Hamilton County.”
The Tigers are 7-1 and play at Bishop Chatard on Saturday. The Huskies are 4-3 and host 3A No. 8 Twin Lakes Saturday afternoon.
