Sept. 18
Conductor and composer Steve Hackman returns this fall to bring his popular Uncharted Series to Hilbert Circle Theatre, beginning with the all-new work Gershwin X Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody in Blue on Sept. 18, featuring George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody:” two of the most beloved, ubiquitous compositions in the history of music. Each work challenged the traditions of their medium by thrillingly combining disparate genres of music: Queen fusing classical, opera, and vaudeville with rock and roll, and Gershwin melding classical with jazz and musical theatre. Bohemian Rhapsody in Blue follows this tradition by combining the pieces themselves, aligning and synthesizing their many kaleidoscopic musical sections to create a cohesive new whole that is at once Gershwin and Queen, and will leave you marveling at the genius of the original compositions. Sept. 20 & 21
For the first concert of the Printing Partners Pops Series 24-25 season, Broadway leading lady Ashley Brown returns to the ISO with her powerhouse vocals and charismatic performances in an ode to her illustrious career on the stage. Having originated the title role in Disney’s Mary Poppins on Broadway and starred as Belle in the national tour of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Brown went on to perform with nearly every major orchestra in North America. Under the direction of Maestro Jack Everly, Brown will perform some of her favorite hits throughout her career from the stage and screen. Sept. 28
The 2024 Opening Night Gala endowed by Christel DeHaan unites the ISO’s sixth music director, Mario Venzago, with pianist Conrad Tao, a musician and composer hailed as a leader of the new generation of classical musicians, who will perform Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. This incredible combination of talent celebrates the beginning of the 2024-25 season on Sept. 28, 2024. Concert-only tickets are available for the must-see event this fall.

Violinist Karen Gomyo, whom the Chicago Tribune describes as “a first-rate artist of real musical command, vitality, brilliance and intensity,” performs Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. Immerse yourself in the ethereal tones of Jennifer Higdon’s blue cathedral.

The ISO will honor George Gershwin, one of the greatest names in American popular songwriting, Oct. 11 and 12 with the 100th anniversary of Rhapsody in Blue, performed by pianist extraordinaire Stewart Goodyear. Joining Goodyear is Broadway vocalist Allison Blackwell.

Funk beats, jazz, wit, and classicism collide in a kaleidoscopic program. ISO’s beloved Principal Cellist Austin Huntington shines in Gulda’s virtuosic Cello Concerto that takes us to a pastoral Austrian vista, a Viennese court, a manic dance club, and everywhere in between in this raucous tribute to rule breaking. ISO Assistant Conductor Su-Han Yang leads Schnittke’s Moz-Art a la Haydn, a playful piece for strings that subversively pays tributes to the past masters. Mozart’s great “Linz” Symphony restores our bearings and rounds out the program.
Nov. 8 & 9
Get on your feet and get loud with the greatest hits of the ’90s and ‘00s Latin pop explosion. La Vida Loca celebrates artists including Enrique Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Santana, Ricky Martin, and more. Conductor Enrico Lopez-Yañez, vocalists Ender Thomas and Jackie Mendez, José Sibaja on trumpet, and Luisito Quintero on percussion join the ISO for a high-octane program featuring all-new symphonic arrangements by Lopez-Yañez and Sibaja.
