Thursday baseball: Hogg’s no-hitter highlights University victory

University’s Seth Hogg pitched a no-hitter for the Class 2A No. 9 Trailblazers during their dominant 20-2, five-inning Pioneer Conference win over Muncie Burris Thursday at RoundTripper Academy.
Hogg threw 13 strikeouts during the game and issued no walks. The Owls got on base in the fifth inning after errors and scored two runs, but Hogg struck out two for the first two outs, then catcher Mitchell Price threw to Owen Schellhase to catch a Burris stealing second base for the third out.
University took care of the game early, scoring 11 runs in the first inning. Tyler Galyean doubled in two runs, then Hogg batted in a pair of runs with a right field hit. Weber Morse added an RBI double, then later scored on an error, as did Grayson Knight.
That made the score 7-0, and Grady Hay added another run by scoring on a wild pitch. Galyean doubled in two runs with a center field line drive, then later scored the Trailblazers’ 11th run on a wild pitch.
University added three runs in the second inning, with Matt Moore batting in two runs. Hogg was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which scored Galyean.
The ‘Blazers completed the scoring with six more runs in the third inning. Price singled in Knight, Quincy Harper was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded (scoring Hay) and Brady Redman had an RBI hit into left field to make the score 17-0.
Hogg then singled in a run, Price drew a bases-loaded walk and Redman scored on Zane Kampmeier’s RBI fielder’s choice.
Hooker, Galyean and Hogg all had two hits, with Galyean and Hogg driving in four runs each. Hooker, Galyean and Knight each scored three runs.
University is 3-3 and plays Guerin Catholic on Saturday morning.

Westfield, ranked No. 2 in 4A, cruised past Brownsburg 12-2 in five innings Thursday in an away Hoosier Crossroads Conference game.
The Shamrocks got on top early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Quentin Markle got on base with a double, then scored on a Keaton Mahan single. With two outs, Cody South blasted a three-run home run into right field, also sending Trey Dorton and Mahan home.
Westfield added three runs in the third inning. Isaac Minder drew a bases-loaded walk to send Mahan home, then Brayden Hibler singled in Casey Fanelli and South. In the fourth inning, Minder’s center field hit got Mac Clarke and Fanelli in to score.
The Shamrocks were now up 9-2, and they completed the scoring with three more runs in the fifth inning. Clarke doubled home Markle and Dorton, then Fanelli’s double brought in Clarke.
Clarke finished the game with two doubles, while Markle was 3-for-4 at the plate. Fanelli and Minder both had two hits. Gage Stanifer pitched four innings for the win, striking out six and allowing three hits. South pitched a perfect fifth inning to finish the game.
Westfield is 3-0 in conference play and 7-0-1 overall. The ‘Rocks complete the series with Brownsburg tonight at Westfield’s field.

That gave Sheridan a 4-2 lead. Indiana Deaf tied the game up with two runs in the top of the second. But it was all Blackhawks after that, with Sheridan scoring 14 runs in the bottom of the inning. Ty Macy and Bales hit back-to-back doubles, scoring one run each. Hovey then doubled in two runs, and Henshaw’s single scored two more to give the ‘Hawks a 10-4 lead.
Macy and Bales both drew bases-loaded walks to add two more runs, then DeVaney batted in a run. Hovey then blasted a triple into right field to score three more runs. RBI singles by Henshaw and Preston Weir completed the scoring.
“It was nice,” said Sheridan coach Adam Spencer. “The guys needed it. We got our whole team in, so that was nice too. Building on this is going to be big, because we got a doubleheader against a really solid Clinton Central team coming up. If we can take some positives from this and play well on Saturday, I like our chances going into the rest of the (Hoosier Heartland) conference.”
Henshaw had a 3-for-3 night at the plate, driving in three runs. Hovey totaled four RBIs and scored three more. Bales, DeVaney and McNair also both scored three runs. Macy got the pitching win.
The Blackhawks are 1-3 for the season and travel to Clinton Central Saturday morning for their doubleheader with the Bulldogs.

Guerin Catholic broke out of a tight game with 1A No. 4 Riverton Parke on Thursday, pulling away in the later innings for a 15-8 road victory.
The Panthers hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Golden Eagles answered with four runs in the top of the second: Will Fremion got on base with a double and Anthony Ferrucci hit his own double to send Fremion home. Sam Tabor then tied the game with a two-RBI single to score Ferrucci and Cuinn Morrow, then Tabor later scored after Braden Reel reached on an error.
That put Guerin Catholic up 4-3, but Riverton Parke took a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the second on a grand slam. The Golden Eagles got two runs back in the third inning, as Tabor batted in Fremion and Morrow scored on an error.
The Panthers added a run in the third inning to take an 8-6 lead. Guerin tied it up in the fourth inning, with Clay Patton and Aidan Morse scoring after Fremion reached on error. Adam Novelen then hit a solo homer in the fifth inning, and the Golden Eagles finally moved ahead, 9-8.
Guerin Catholic then surged ahead in the sixth inning, scoring five runs. Fremion and Morrow scored after Novelen reached on error. Daniel Donahue got home on a wild pitch, then Novelen scored after Morse was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Patton scored on a wild pitch, and GC was up 14-8.
The Golden Eagles got one more run in the seventh inning. Josh Schaff’s center field single sent Ferrucci home. Schaff and Ferrucci were two of six Guerin Catholic players to have two hits in the game, joining Patton, Reel, Fremion and Tabor. Reel also hit a double, while Tabor batted in three runs. Fremion and Morrow both scored three times.
Spencer Wilt got the pitching win, striking out eight in five innings.
The Golden Eagles are 3-3 and play at 2A No. 9 University Saturday morning.

Hamilton Southeastern dropped a Thursday HCC game at 4A No. 6 Zionsville 7-0.
The Royals were held to two hits, one each from Cole Earlewine and Landon Riekhof.
Southeastern is 0-3 in the conference and 3-5-1 overall. The Royals will host the Eagles tonight at Ken Seitz Field to complete the HCC series.
