University girls put early lead to good use, take down Brebeuf Jesuit

University’s girls used a 12-1 surge at the start of the second half to take control of their Tuesday night game at Brebeuf Jesuit and ended a three-game losing streak with a 55-40 win.
Senior Kelsey DuBois put up her best numbers of the season to lead University. The 6-0 senior had 22 points, 16 rebounds, eight blocked shots and four assists to pace the Trailblazers. The NYU commit was 8 for 11 from the field, including 2 for 3 on three pointers.
University senior Payton Seay had 16 of her 20 points in the second half, including 12 points in the decisive third quarter when University stretched a two-point halftime lead to a 40-29 advantage entering the final quarter. Seay added six rebounds.
The teams traded baskets early in the contest before DuBois hit a three pointer with 3:17 left in the first quarter to put the Trailblazers on top for good at 7-6. University scored the last 9 points of the quarter with Seay scoring on a steal and lay-in, DuBois connecting at the rim and a Jordan Patterson bucket with four second left.
Brebeuf outscored University 14-9 in the second quarter, closing to within 22-20 at the half on a three point shot just before the halftime buzzer.
University came out and attacked the basket in the third quarter. DuBois scored down low and Payton Seay made foul shots and Taylor Seay split a pair of free throws to get University to a 29-20 lead three minutes in to the second quarter. Payton Seay and DuBois kept scoring at the rim as they combined for 16 of University’s 18 points in the period. University led 40-29 after three on Payton Seay’s bucket with seven seconds left.
Brebeuf scored the first three points of the fourth period to close within 40-32 before a 10-0 Blazers run blew the game open. DuBois fed Payton Seay for a post-up bucket, Kiera Bright nailed a three pointer for a 45-32. The Blazers forced a five-second count on a Brebeuf inbound attempt before DuBois made two foul shots after grabbing an offensive rebound. Another DuBois rebound bucket and a split of a pair of free throws put the lead at 50-32 with 2:56 left.
The win improved the University record to 4-3 on the season. Brebeuf lost for the first time in four games.
University is next in action Tuesday night at Clinton Prairie. The Gophers will bring a 4-3 record in to the contest.
