The University girls won their tenth straight game with an entertaining 74-64 win over Indianapolis City Champion Heritage Christian Tuesday night at The U Center.
The Trailblazers were led by their dynamic senior duo of Kelsey DuBois and Payton Seay. DuBois scored 22 points, pulled down 19 rebounds, blocked six shots and handed out four assists. Seay scored 15 points, had 11 rebounds and four assists. Kamryn Washington had a career-high 13 points to give University three players in double figures.
The Trailblazers dominated the boards, outrebounding the Eagles 51-22. In addition to the double-digit rebound totals of DuBois and Payton Seay, Jordan Patterson gathered seven rebounds and Payton Seay had five.
University led for the last 30 minutes of the game, but the contest featured a series of spurts by both teams. The Blazers took the lead for good at 7-6 on a reverse layin by DuBois. University ended the quarter on a 18-3 run to lead 23-9 after the opening eight minutes. DuBois had 10 points in the opening period and Taylor Seay had five.
Heritage Christian came out fast in the second quarter, pulling with 25-17 in the first two minutes of the stanza. From there the Trailblazers went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to lead 36-19. The Eagles outscored University 15-2 for the rest of the first half, cutting the Blazers lead to 38-34 on a bucket at the buzzer by Mya Davis. Davis had 12 points in the second quarter.
University scored the first six points of the second half on a rebound basket by DuBois and two buckets by Taylor Seay to go on top 44-34. After Heritage Christian cut University’s lead to 49-43 DuBois scored off a nifty pass from Payton Seay for a 51-43 lead with 3:10 left in the period. Those turned out to be the last points scored in the quarter as the teams traded turnovers and missed shots for the rest of the third quarter.
University started fast in the fourth quarter by scoring the first seven points. DuBois put in a rebound. Washington scored off a Payton Seay assist and was fouled, completing the three point play. DuBois found Washington for a layin and a 58-45 University lead with 6:00 left in the game. Heritage Christian got no closer than nine points the rest of the game. Payton Seay had ten points in the final period and Washington had nine.
Koryn Marshall led Heritage Christian with 21 points. Davis ended with 18 and Joslyn Marshall had 16. The Eagles record falls to 14-6.
University is now 16-4 on the season. The Trailblazers are scheduled to host Tri-West Thursday night on Senior Night. University closes the season Saturday afternoon at Tipton.
