The County Line
Tim Green is retiring as Carmel Police chief, and it seems like only yesterday he was appointed to the job. And it doesn’t seem at all possible it’s been 35 years since he joined the Carmel PD. I’ve known Tim all that time, ridden with him when he was working the midnight shift and watched him rise through the ranks to become chief of a department of more than 100 officers.
Being chief of a major police department is a tough job in today’s environment where praise is often not as frequent as criticism. But, Tim has done a great job of keeping crime to a minimum and his troops in a professional mode.
Tim was a young 20-something when he was hired as a patrolman on the CPD. He had briefly worked for a security firm before, and while on that job saved the life of a Carmel area resident by pulling the man from a burning car. For that, Tim was awarded a Hamilton County Red Cross lifesaving citation before he even became a cop.
Now he’s retiring, and it’s too bad in a way. I always thought he was made for the job. But, his replacement, Jim Barlow, has also proved himself on the job, being with the CPD since he was a kid. He’ll do fine.
Tim officially retires June 1. He hasn’t announced his plans thereafter. Whatever they include, many folks in the area wish him well and offer him a sincere thanks for a job well done.
