Tennis: Southeastern gets first win; Huskies keep improving

After dropping its first three dual meets, the Hamilton Southeastern girls tennis team got in the win column on Tuesday.
The Royals beat Noblesville 5-0 at the Millers’ courts at Noblesville East Middle School. Southeastern won all five matches in straight sets.
“After a slow start, it was good to pick up a win tonight,” said Royals coach Kirk Webber. “Hopefully that will get the ball rolling for us.”
The Millers rebounded by beating Lapel on Wednesday 4-1. Madi Randolph led the way at No. 1 singles, while Alli Maskew took the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-0.

Westfield dropped a pair of dual meets this week.
On Monday, the Shamrocks lost to Brownsburg 4-1 in an HCC dual meet. Emma Schwind got Westfield’s win at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
The ‘Rocks dropped a 3-2 dual to Harrison on Wednesday. No. 1 Chole Kalis and No. 2 Julia Gabennesch were straight set winners in singles.

Hamilton Heights is seeing steady improvement, including a dual meet win on Wednesday.
The Huskies beat Frankton 3-2. Brooke Sears came from a set down to win at No. 3 singles. Heights also won both doubles matches, with No. 2 Cortney Martin and Maddie Nickel getting a comeback win, 6-4 in the third. Huskies coach Wayne Rupe said the team is continuing to “make some very good strides in getting better.”
No. 1 Gwen Kelley and Caitlin Hartwick were straight-set winners.

No. 3 singles Franny Werner won her match 14-12 in a super tiebreak over Ellen Gardner, after the two split sets.
The Greyhounds beat West Lafayette 5-0 on Wednesday. Bri Hernandez got her first varsity win at No. 2 doubles. Individual stats were unavailable at press time.
