Tennis: Royals, Shamrocks compete in weekend invitationals

Hamilton Southeastern competed in the Park Tudor Invitational on Saturday, finishing second out of eight teams.
The No. 12-ranked Royals scored 17 team points, behind only winner Brownsburg’s 23 points. Southeastern won four out of five first round matches, and also won all five of its third-round matches.
No. 2 singles Ashley Spirrison won in that flight, going 3-0. No. 1 singles Audrey De Witt and No. 3 singles Tea Vrkic both placed third, finishing 2-1 for the day.
The Royals’ No. 1 doubles team of Jeorgia Templin and Taylor Cleary also went 2-1 to place third. No. 2 doubles Jillian Pence and Nikki Hite lost their first match in a super tiebreaker, but then won the next two to place fourth and go 2-1.
“It was disappointing to not come home with the trophy, but overall, it was a good day of tennis as we won 11 out of 15 matches,” said HSE coach Kirk Webber.

Westfield tied for fourth with Northview at the Crawfordsville Athenian Invitational on Saturday.
No. 3 singles Julia Gabennesch captured second place with a win over Cathedral in the first round 6-2, 6-2 and a win against Terre Haute North 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. She lost in the finals to Providence 1-6, 0-6 to take runner-up honors.
No. 2 doubles Meredith Carlson and Maya Raymond started with a win over Northview 6-2, 6-0. Meredith Carlson and Claire Thurlow won their second round over North Montgomery 6-3, 6-3. Claire Thurlow and Maya Raymond dropped a close three-set tiebreaker in the finals to Delta 2-6, 7-5, 9-11, finishing in second place.
No. 1 doubles Emma Clary and Katy Zaloudek dropped their first round to Terre Haute North 3-6, 6-7 (4). They rebounded to win against Northview 6-3, 6-3 in the second round and won their third round 6-1, 6-1 against North Montgomery to take the fifth spot overall.
No. 2 singles Maddie Heilmann won her second round match against Crawfordsville 6-0, 6-4 to take fifth place overall.
