Tennis: No. 1 Carmel picks up dual meet victories

The Carmel girls tennis team rolled to two dual meet victories this week.
The No. 1-ranked Greyhounds cruised past Zionsville 5-0 Thursday at the Todd Witsken Tennis Center. No. 1 singles Lauren Lemonds and No. 3 singles Apurva Manas both won their matches 6-0, 6-0. All five of the matches were decided in straight sets.
In a Wednesday meet, Carmel defeated West Lafayette 5-0. The ‘Hounds again won all five matches in straight sets, including 6-0, 6-0 wins from Soren Liechter at No. 2 singles and Syd Morris at No. 3 singles.

Hamilton Southeastern lost a tough Hoosier Crossroads Conference match to No. 15 Brownsburg 3-2 on Thursday.
The No. 5-ranked Royals got their wins from No. 1 singles Audrey De Witt and No. 2 singles Ashley Spirrison, both of whom won in straight sets.
“This was a tough Brownsburg team and we knew coming into the match it was going to be a close one,” said HSE coach Kirk Webber. “Unfortunately, we ended up on the wrong side of it.”
Southeastern is 3-2 and will play at the Park Tudor Invitational on Saturday.

Westfield fell to Avon 4-1 in a Thursday Hoosier Crossroads Conference dual meet.
The No. 1 doubles team of Emma Clary and Katy Zaloudek got the Shamrocks’ lone win in three sets. No. 3 singles Julia Gabennesch lost a tough match in straight sets.
On Wednesday, Westfield dropped a 5-0 match to Harrison. No. 2 singles Maddie Heilmann fell in a hard-fought three set match, while the No. 1 doubles team of Clary and Zaloudek also lost in three sets. No. 3 singles Gabbenesch fell in two tough sets, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

Hamilton Heights beat rival Tipton 4-1 on Wednesday.
Both doubles teams won easily, as did No. 3 singles Abby Weber. At No. 2 singles, Kennedy Hunter came back from a set down to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
“It was great to see our doubles teams and Abby at No. 3 come out and take control early,” said Huskies coach Cameron Scott. “They played strong tonight to get wins. The big highlight of the night though was Kennedy at No. 2. She just played better and better as the match wore on and really fought to earn a great win over a solid opponent. She’s been working her tail off in practice, and it’s awesome to see that hard work turn into some strong tennis.”
Heights also won the junior varsity match 5-2, getting wins from Hailey VanOeveren and Maddie Nickel in singles and Addi Gordon/Katy Beery, Kate Biggs/Cortney Martin, and Paige Doucette/Ashley Heniser in doubles.
