Food is more than nourishment – it’s a bridge between cultures, a keeper of traditions, and a way to bring people together. Have you ever thought about the stories behind the flavors on your plate? The journeys they’ve taken across generations and continents to reach your table?
As someone born and raised in India and now raising my Indo-American children in Indiana, I’ve experienced firsthand how food connects us to home, even when we’re far from it. It preserves our heritage, sparks conversations, and helps us build relationships with those around us. This passion for culture, belonging, and storytelling is what inspired Taste of Community, an upcoming anthology celebrating the role of food in fostering human connection.
We invite everyone to be part of this journey – whether you have a powerful food story to share, enjoy engaging with diverse cultural experiences, or simply love food and community. Your voice matters, and your perspective adds to the rich tapestry of this project.
Why share your story?
Food is a universal storyteller. It can transport us back to childhood kitchens, bring generations together around the same recipe, and introduce us to new cultures with just one bite. Your story – whether about a cherished family meal, a recipe passed down for generations, or a dish that represents your heritage – deserves to be told.
How to participate
We welcome submissions of 500 to 1,000 words sharing your personal experiences with food, along with two to three photos that bring your story to life. Submissions are due by March 31, 2025.
To help spark inspiration, here are some questions to consider:
- What dish best represents your family’s traditions?
- How has cooking changed for you over the years?
- What does home cooking mean to you?
- How does food sustain cultural identity and keep families connected?
Perks for selected authors
Contributors will receive a physical copy of the anthology and access to a private online community for continued conversations and storytelling.
Know someone with a great story to share? Or perhaps you love learning about different cultures through food? Feel free to spread the word – Taste of Community is for everyone who finds joy in food, storytelling, and meaningful connections.
